OCR technology what is it how does it work and what are some of it's use-cases (tech glossary)

Optical character recognition (OCR) is the electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, handwritten, or printed text into machine-encoded text. OCR is a subfield of pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and computer vision research.

Some systems can generate formatted output that closely resembles the original page, including images, columns, and other non-textual components.

Some use cases include:

  • Data entry
  • Traffic sign & vehicle registration number recognition
  • Scanning & book digitization efforts

Student Information Systems - What are they and how are they used in edtech

A student information system (SIS), also known as a student management system, school administration software, or student administration system, is a management information system used to manage student data in educational establishments. It brings together students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

These types of software platforms can be found as independent platforms but their functionality can sometimes be included within a Learning Management System (LMS) application.

(Resource) What is reference management software and how is it used?

A reference management system is a type of software used primarily by academia and the research community to keep track of information sources in papers.

Scholars and authors can use this software to record and use bibliographic citations (references) as well as manage project references. Modern reference management software is typically integrated with word processors, resulting in the automatic generation of a reference list in the appropriate format to meet editing conventions and properly credit the original source of other information.

Online libraries and resources are also available to most users through their reference management software and the ability to also search through search engines or 3rd party website for even more material.

(Glossary/Resource) What's an interactive whiteboard and how is it used in education

An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is a large interactive display board shaped like a whiteboard for use in classrooms as a modern replacement to the traditional whiteboard used by teachers. It can be a standalone touchscreen computer used to perform tasks and operations on its own, or it can be a connectable piece of equipment used as a touchpad to control computers from a projector. The first interactive whiteboards were created for use in the workplace.

A device driver is usually installed on the computer to which the whiteboard is connected so that it can function as a Human Input Device (HID), similar to a mouse or other type of hardware like a USB dock.

The majority of IWBs come with software that includes tools and features that are specifically designed to maximize interaction opportunities.

What is a LMS and how does it work?

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting, automation and delivery of educational courses. LMSs are focused on online learning delivery but support a range of uses, acting as a platform for online content.

An LMS may offer classroom management for instructor-led training or a flipped classroom, used in higher education, but not in the corporate space.
